Enhancing carotenogenesis in terrestrial microalgae by UV-A light stress

Abstract Carotenoids are among the most widely distributed pigments in nature with broad application options pharmacology, cosmetics and food industries. For commercial-scale production using microalgae, however, it is crucial to find best performing strains regarding growth yields of products interest. As terrestrial microalgae present ability quickly adapt changing or unfavorable environmental conditions through cell-specific defense mechanisms, they constitute highly promising candidates. The study thus aimed investigate potential five microalgal increasingly produce carotenoids ?-carotene, canthaxanthin astaxanthin when being exposed UV-A stress. Light stress experiments were performed a novel irradiation system based on UV-LED technology. Microalgal cultures treated radiation stimulate carotenogenesis time-dependent effects investigated by high-performance liquid chromatography analysis. enhance de novo biosynthesis targeted metabolites under influence light could be confirmed significantly increased four out enhanced ?-carotene concentration at least one strain during 72 h investigation. Overall, results provided evidence that can effective rapidly inducing harbors vast for further exploitation large-scale carotenoid production.
